Hot Rod Magazine Top Speed Challenge

The intention of this information is to give you a GENERAL idea of our requirements. This is NOT an all inclusive list of the requirements to run at an ECTA event.

Every April beginning in 2005, Hot Rod Magazine has sponsored the annual Top Speed Challenge, run by the ECTA at the Maxton mile-long course.
The prestigious Top Speed Challenge jacket is awarded to the racer who turns in the fastest time in each of Street and Super Street classes at the
ECTA season opener in May. All cars competing for this coveted prize must be street legal, and otherwise prepared in accordance with the ECTA’s rules.

coverage in Hot Rod Magazine, as well. We at the ECTA thank them for their interest in land speed racing and their excellent coverage of this event

Below is a partial summary of the class rules and safety specification for the classes involved in the Top Speed Challenge.

The following information is NOT a complete list of the rules and safety requirements you will need to follow in order to run at an ECTA event.
For the complete list, please request an ECTA rulebook. The rulebook request form is located in the FAQ section of this web site.

STREET CATEGORY
This category is intended for street driven vehicles only. Cars, Street Rods, Pick-up Trucks and Sports Cars are included. In keeping with the
intent of the class all vehicles must be licensed/tagged and insured, PROOF REQUIRED. Fiberglass reproductions or phantom bodies are acceptable as long
as the vehicle is street legal.

All street equipment must be retained and in working order. These items shall include but not be limited to: functional windows, wipers, horn, working
lights & directionals, alternator, radiator, (Power steering & power brakes if installed must be operable) full street legal interior minus rear seat.
Mufflers are required and must be in use. Choice of engine, transmission and rear end is unlimited.

SUPER STREET – /GSS, /FSS, /BGSS, / BFSS.

Multiple Carburetion, Fuel Injection and Superchargers / Turbochargers allowed In Super Street.

Nitrous Oxide is the only additional fuel additive allowed in the fuel class, Alcohol and Nitromethane are NOT permitted. No items are allowed that would
make any vehicle illegal for street use.

All ECTA safety rules apply for the speed class run.

Engine classes allowed are: AA, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I.

REAL STREET – /GRS, / FRS

Real Street vehicles are limited to single 4-bbl carburetion only, No fuel injection and no supercharging. No items are allowed that would make any vehicle
illegal for street use.

All ECTA safety rules apply for the speed class run.

Engine classes allowed are: AA, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I.

TIME ONLY – /TO Under 135 MPH

­ Street cars­ running under 135 MPH shall be allowed to run with the following exceptions to the rules: No roll structure (unless a convertible) , no fire
extinguishing system, no throttle pedal toe strap. Factory seat belts are acceptable. These exceptions do not include CONVERTIBLES or PLASTIC BODIED cars.

Drivers without the recommended SFI 3.2A/1 fire suit must wear long sleeve shirt and pants (cotton recommended).

Once a car exceeds a 5 MPH cushion it will not be allowed to run again until it is in full compliance with competition rules.

GENERAL COMPETITION REQUIREMENTS
SECTION II

II-1 APPEARANCE: All vehicles entered in an event must be maintained so as to present a neat appearance. All owners, drivers/riders and
crews will be responsible for the maintenance of their pit area and will be expected to present a neat and respectable appearance. There is NO garbage or
oil collection, so if you bring it in , please take it with you when you leave.

II-2 ENGINES: Any internal combustion engine using either a 2 stroke or 4 stroke Otto cycle or diesel cycle may compete in any category ,
except for Vintage engine classes described hereinafter. In Production, Grand Touring, XF, XO, XXF, XXO and V4 classes, non-production engines or
aftermarket blocks (even though they accept production crankshafts, cams and cylinder heads) may not be used. All other engines that transmit the power
through the wheels may run in Streamliner class only. Only Streamliners may use more than one engine at the same time. Reaction propulsion engines require
special permission to run ECTA events.

B – 373 thru 439 cid 6.11 to 7.10 L

C – 306 thru 372 cid 5.01 to 6.10 L

D – 261 thru 305 cid 4.27 to 5.00 L

E – 184 thru 260 cid 3.01 to 4.26 L

F – 123 thru 183 cid 2.01 to 3.00 L

G – 93 thru 122 cid 1.51 to 2.00 L

H – 62 thru 92 cid 1.01 to 1.50 L

I – 46 thru 61 cid 0.76 to 1.00 L

J - 31 thru 45 cid 0.51 to 0.75 L

K – 16 thru 30 cid 0.26 to 0.50 L

L – 15 cid and under 0.00 to 0.25 L

XF class consists of any production FORD / MERCURY, passenger car V-8 flathead engine, 1932 thru 1953, up to 325 cubic inches displacement.

XO class consists of overhead valve (OHV) and flathead inline, V-8 or V-12 engines, 1959 or earlier design, up to 325 cubic inch
displacement. Examples include Chevrolet, GMC, Hudson, Packard, Buick, Lincoln and Cadillac engines. Foreign engines are NOT included.

XXF class is an XF engine, as described, with overhead valve conversion cylinder heads, such as Ardun Ford.

XXO class is an XO engine, as described, with a specialty cylinder head, such as the Wayne 12 port.

X c lass engines, which are over 325 cid, but under 375 cid, shall be classified as either XXF or XXO. Overhead cam s pecialty cylinder
heads are NOT allowed in the XF,XO,XXF & XXO classes
V4 (Vintage Four) class consists of any pre-1935 American made four cylinder automotive production engine, up to 220 cid. Specialty heads
are allowed. Vintage Four engines must compete in a Vintage body (pre-’49), except special construction.

LX is for small flathead engines such as Briggs and Stratton.

For reasons of economy and historical authenticity, vintage engine modifications should be restricted to older technology levels so far as i s practical.
A ccordingly, in classes XO, XF, XXF, XXO and V4, using vintage bodies .

a) Turbochargers are not permitted.

b) Computers are allowed for data collection purposes only.

The displacement of reciprocating engines shall be computed by the following formula: bore x bore x stroke x .7854 x number of cylinders. For
non-reciprocating engines, equivalent displacement will be calculated by the following formula: ED = SV x 2.3 where SV is the Swept Volume.

II-3 FUELS : In fuel classes, any approved liquid fuel may be used. Examples of approved fuels are: nitrous oxide, nitromethane, alcohol ,
and hydrogen .

In Gasoline classes, pump or race gas with a Dielectric Constant of 2.025 is acceptable. The addition of compounds containing nitrogen and or oxygen may
produce a meter reading outside this range. Water injection is allowed, but water tanks must be inspected and sealed by an ECTA official. Engines
using LPG or Diesel fuel may compete in gasoline classes.

For all record attempts, the competitor must submit to a fuel check in impound after the record run.

II-4 FRAME / CHASSIS: Except where specifically forbidden by class rules, any design frame may be used. The frame design is subject to the
approval of the ECTA Race Committee and must be of sufficient strength to resist flex or twist. The burden of proof of the strength of a given design lies
with the entrant.

ll-5 DRIVE HUBS: Above 150 MPH, any vehicle equipped with a non-retained axle bearing (non-Hotchkiss type rear axle) assembly must
incorporate an approved hub to prevent loss of a wheel in the event of a rear axle failure. Semi or full floating rear axles are sufficient. Late model
rear ends using “C” clip axle retainers are NOT acceptable.

II-6 TIRES: Due to the extended duration of this type event Drag slicks are not recommended. No recaps allowed. Any tire deviation must
be submitted to the ECTA Race Committee, in writing, 45 days prior to any meet. T ubes are required, except for tires expressly designed for use without
tubes. Entrants shall follow tire manufacturer's recommended inflation pressure. Higher pressures may be required, based on weight and
speed. However caution should be exercised on excessive pressures (i.e. 100 psi.) Exceptions to any part of the forgoing may be granted in the face of a
letter from the manufacturer stating the speed and pressure at w hi ch a tire may be run.

Tires may be inspected at any time by the Race Committee. Adequate tire clearance between the tire and body or chassis is required. Metal tire valve caps
must be fitted to all tire valve stems.

Land Speed Tires, approved and meeting the minimum requirements, are acceptable in all classes.

The minimum tire requirements will be governed by ECTA inspection officials as follows:

Up to 125 MPH: Original equipment tire QR & RR.

Up to 150 MPH: SR, TR or UR rated tires.

Up to 175 MPH: HR rated tires.

Up to 200 MPH: VR or ZR rated tires.

Up to 220 MPH: WR & YR rated tires or steel-belted drag radials .

Up to 250 MPH: NASCAR spec. Speedway tires.

Up to 300 MPH: Special tires designed by the manufacturer, i.e. Bonneville tires or Land Speed tires.

Over 300 MPH: Tire requirements shall be determined by ECTA Race Committee .

II-7 TREAD: Tread is defined as the measurement from the centerplane of one tire to the centerplane of the opposite tire of paired wheels.
The minimum tread width for all Vintage Category vehicles is 44” front and 50” rear. Modified Roadsters are exempt from the front tread requirements.
Special Construction Category vehicles are not subject to this rule.

II-8 WHEELS: All nonferrous wheels on which lug nuts would come in direct contact with the wheel must have a 1/4” thick steel retaining
plate or larger o.d. heavy gauge individual washers under all lug nuts. T his does not apply to spindle mount wheels. Magnesium wheels are NOT recommended
and, if used, must have an initial Zyglo certificate and stamp. Wheels are to be re-inspected if any adverse conditions arises. Inspections made with tires
mounted are accepted. It is recommended that tire pressure used on two piece wheels does NOT exceed 60 psi., or manufacture’s specifications.

Classes over 200 MPH: Wheels used must be manufactured for racing or reinforced as below. 1” lug nuts are required on all vehicles.

Classes under 200 MPH: The smallest part of the hex of a lug nut must be larger than the largest part of the taper of the mounting hole. Lug nuts must
torque totally against a wheel’s tapered surface. A minimum of 5/8” of the stud threads must be engaged within the lug nut.

Vehicles with tires having a diameter of 30” or with wheels over 17” in diameter must use a wheel manufactured for racing or reinforced as below. Wheels
must be attached with at least 5 studs having a minimum diameter of 1/2” and 1” hex nuts.

In either of the previous cases, wheels must be manufactured for racing purposes or reinforced as follows: By welding the entire area of attachment between
the rim and the center section of either the inside or outside of the wheel. Alloy wheels not certified by the manufacturer for racing (i.e. factory wheels
are not allowed above 150 MPH. Also , no closed end (Acorn type) lug nuts are allowed.

Wire wheels designed for automotive racing applications such as Rudge or Dayton are allowed. OEM wire wheels are allowed only in classes under 200 MPH
provided the center section is adequately reinforced. Motorcycle wheels not designed for automotive applications are prohibited.

Full wheel discs are legal in all categories if securely fastened to the wheel with six (6) or more machine grade screws or three (3) approved Dzus type
fasteners. Inner wheel discs must be securely mounted to either the wheel or axle. All hub caps must be removed.

II-9 SHOCKS: A functional shock absorber is required for each sprung wheel.

II-10 FENDER SKIRTS: Fender skirts are NOT allowed, except in Streamliner classes.

II-11 PUSH BARS: All cars incapable of starting under their own power must be equipped with bumpers or a push bar. Push bars may not offer
any aerodynamic advantage. No horizontal paneling is allowed between the rear of the body and the bumper / push bar. Special Construction category vehicles
are not subject to this rule.

Towed starts will NOT be permitted.

II-12 BALLAST: Ballast may be carried in all categories, but must be securely mounted, and may not be used to streamline the car. It is recommended that ballast be mounted as low as possible.

II-1 3 REPLICA BODIES & PANELS: Replicas of original stock bodies may be used in all categories provide they are exact dimensional replicas of factory production units which are otherwise acceptable in the category.

II-1 4 NUMBER / CLASS DESIGNATION: ECTA will be using SCTA/ BNI numbers. Competition numbers will be assigned upon acceptance of an entry. Numbers 1 through 25 and others are reserved and will not be available. It has been the tradition the three repetitive digits are assigned to Streamliners only, i.e. 111, 333, 555 etc. Numbers may be reassigned if not used within a three year allotted time span. Numbers should be at least 6 ” high. The current class designation must be 3” high and shall appear on the race vehicle adjacent to the number. Number and c lass shall appear on both sides of the vehicle.

II-1 5 CANOPIES: Canopies enclosing the driver are permitted in Streamliner and Lakester classes only and must be securely closed in competition . Canopies must be able to be opened from both the inside and outside without the use of to o ls. Latches must be clearly marked on the outside of the vehicle in case of an emergency.

II-1 6 TARPAULINS & TONNEAU COVERS: Cockpits may be covered with any nonflammable material and may be flexible or rigid unless otherwise stated in the class rules. No sharp or protruding edges are allowed. Padding is recommended. Tarpaulins, rigid or non-rigid on pick-ups (including rancheros, etc.) must be aligned with and no higher than the sides of the bed.

II-1 7 FOUR WHEEL DRIVE: Four wheel drive systems are allowed only in Special Construction and Production Category, where the competing vehicle was originally equipped with four wheel drive.

II- 18 AIR DUCT: Air ducts shall originate and exit in the rear 50% of the vehicle body.

II- 19 BOBBING: Bobbing is allowed in selected classes. See vehicle class descriptions.

II-2 0 FLOORBOARDS: F loorboards shall be mounted above the frame or in stock location. T hey shall be well fitted and securely attached with all holes sealed.

II-2 1 HOOD SCOOPS: On all full bodied, unblown vehicles, hood scoops shall not extend more than 11” above the hood surface.

II-2 2 BELLY PAN: All belly pans must have holes for drainage.

II-2 3 STEP PAN: A step pan may enclose the area from the aft-most portion of the firewall to a line 10” forward of the rear axle centerline and shall not be lower than the fro nt at any point plus the thickness of the material used. The step pan shall be flat and parallel to the ground. A box may be constructed to enclose the portion of the transmission which protrudes through the step pan. the box must be rectangular in design, flat on the bottom, covering only the exposed portion of the transmission. The box shall not be tapered in any way, maximum clearance from the transmission shall be 1”. Chassis crossmembers are not considered as part of the frame for purposed of this rule. The transition at the rear of the step pan to the floorboard shall occur at a 45 degree or steeper angle to be exempted from the definition of a belly pan. NOTE: A step pan shall not be considered as part of a belly pan for classification purposes.

II- 24 COMPUTERS: Vehicles may be equipped with a computer which effects engine operations ONLY, i.e., timed fuel injection. Except in Vintage Engine Class, Classic Category and Real Street Classes.

Active micro-processor or non-driver controlled traction control devices are not allowed except on Production class vehicles where the unit (unmodified) is OEM equipment.

Traction control devices are defined as anything that will operate the brakes either individually or as a group, in order to reduce wheel slip, that is not driver controlled though the use of the brake pedal. No actuators either electronic or mechanical are allowed in the wheel braking system that are not directly controlled by the brake pedal. Other devices such as pressure sensors, balance valves and fluid level indicators are allowed.

II- 25 DATA RECORDERS: Entrants may use a data recorder to record the functions of the vehicle so long as the recorder does not activate any function of the vehicle, i.e., clutch operation, etc.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
SECTION III

III-1 DRIVERS HELMET & CLOTHING: All drivers over 135 MPH MUST wear a driver’s suit, gloves and boots to match. Protective underwear is highly recommended. All items must be in clean and serviceable condition. It is advisable not to wear synthetic clothing material under the drivers suit. All suits must have an SFI rating tag attached.

DRIVERS SUIT REQUIREMENTS:

SFI 3.2A/1 Any unblown closed cars under 150 MPH.

and recommended on all cars under 135 MPH.

III-1.1 DRIVER’S HELMET: All drivers / riders must wear a full faced helmet with face shield which meets Snell Foundation SA2005 or M2005 or later specifications. No open-faced helmets allowed. Helmets must be undamaged and in serviceable condition. Eye glasses worn under the helmet must be shatterproof.

Head sock meeting SFI 3.3 specs or a helmet skirt must be worn by all drivers over 175 MPH.

III-1.2 DRIVER’S HELMET SUPPORT A side and rear helmet support system is recommended for use in all vehicles.

Forward Movement  All vehicles over 175 mph shall have an engineered and tested SFI spec 38.1 type head and neck restrainst system.

Latereral Movement  The seat or roll cage structure shall provide restriction to lateralhead movement of less than 2.0 inches per side inclusive deflection for vehicles over 175mph.

III-2 ROLL BAR & ROLL CAGE: All cars in competition over 135 MPH, must be equipped with a roll bar or roll cage structure. All closed cars between 135 and 150 MPH must have a 4 point roll bar. All closed cars between 150 and 175 MPH must have a 6 – point roll bar. All closed cars over 175 MPH must have a full roll cage. All open cars are advanced one bar / cage category over closed cars. Any individual wishing to enter a vehicle which deviates from these rules MUST contact the ECTA 45 days before the event for approval.

 Current NHRA certified roll cage equivalents are acceptable.

III-4.1 SEAT BELTS: Quick release, competition type seat belts and shoulder harness, with 3” lap belt, 3” shoulder belts and 2” crotch strap (5 point) are mandatory (6 point systems are highly recommended) . All seat belts must be in good condition, and have a manufactures tag and legible date no more than five years old and SFI 16.1 Certification Label. When arm restraints are worn with a belt system that utilizes a “latch lever” with a built-in latch lock, a protective cover shall be installed to prevent the arm restraint from accidentally releasing the latch lever. Tape is NOT sufficient as protection.

III-10 PARACHUTE: An approved parachute is required on all cars over 175 MPH. Vehicles which exceed 225 MPH with two wheel brakes and 250 MPH with four wheel brakes, shall be equipped with two independent parachute systems. Parachutes must be securely mounted to a suitable frame crossmember. Special attention shall be given to the length and mounting point of the parachute tether line, as well as it’s proper function.

III-11 PARACHUTE RELEASE: Any car equipped with a parachute must have an easy to reach release mounted in such a fashion that the driver may actuate it under emergency conditions while strapped securely in his seat.
